As our calculations show, the relaxation of the electrical double-layer is lightning-fast (τr≈0.1\tau_r \approx 0.1τr​≈0.1 s), ion transport in the electrolyte is moderately slow (τe≈100\tau_e \approx 100τe​≈100 s), and the diffusion of atoms inside the solid particles is glacial (τs≈2500\tau_s \approx 2500τs​≈2500 s). This stiffness poses a tremendous challenge for numerical solvers, including modern Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs). An optimizer trying to learn the solution is like a person trying to listen to a whisper (the slow diffusion) while standing next to a shouting person (the fast reaction). The gradient of the loss function is completely dominated by the fastest dynamics, causing the learning algorithm to neglect the slow, long-term behavior that is often most important. Overcoming this "gradient imbalance" with techniques like adaptive weighting or curriculum learning is a frontier of research, a place where the deep physical structure of the battery, as revealed by the DFN model, directly informs the development of next-generation artificial intelligence.
